Observance and Tribute to Mariners
St. David's parish -- 'The Church Alongside Seafarers' -- welcomes all to its Sea Sunday service July 12 at 10 am to remember, celebrate, give thanks and pray, for all mariners who ply the perilous seas in both war and peace.
This year, world affairs, especially in the Strait of Hormuz, have brought shipping and seafarers to everyone's attention. It is now realized how much we all depend on the sea and mariners worldwide, who face conflicts, pirates, storms and loneliness.
The question, "Is Canada a maritime nation?" is often asked and the answer has to be a resounding "Yes". With 90% of trade transported by sea, any disruption can be catastrophic to our way of life. Computers, vehicles, food, oil, clothes, fertilizer, toys, and even salt to keep roads clear in winter are but a few of the items imported by sea. We also remember the fishers who face great danger to bring food to our tables, as well as Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard ships and crew whose watch is constant.
